Situated beside the largest lake in New Zealand's South Island is the country town of Te Anau.

Here at the northwestern edge of the green farmland of Southland, and across the water from the wild rainforest of the Fiordland National Park, Te Anau is the 'gateway to the fiords' being the closest town to Milford Sound, being only a scenic 2½ hour drive away

Your Milford Sound Select coach stops off here for morning tea, you can choose to have refreshments here, or on the boat during the cruise on Milford Sound.

The name Te Anau, is derived from the Maori name which describes a cave of rushing water, this cave, lost for generations was rediscovered on the rugged bush clad shore over the lake from the town. Today most of the visitors to Te Anau are either on their way to Milford Sound or on their way to walk one of the many popular and famous tracks in the district. The Milfrod Track starts at the head of Lake Te Anau and 3 days later the walkers arrive in Milford Sound, this track continues to earn the distinction of the 'Best Walk in the World". Other tracks of renown in the area include the Hollyford, the Kepler, the Rees, all spectacular in their own way.

Te Anau is your last chance to shop for any extras you require, in Milford Sound there is only a boat terminal and an airstrip. Refreshments and lunch can be purchased while on the boat cruise.
